Deciding on a new home: how do honeybees agree?

A swarm of honeybees (Apis mellifera) is capable of selecting one nest-site when faced with a choice of several. We adapt classical mathematical models of disease, information and competing beliefs to such decision-making processes. We show that the collective decision may be arrived at without the necessity for any bee to make any comparison between sites.

How Honeybees Defy Gravity with Royal Jelly to Raise Queens

The female sex in honeybees (Apis spp.) comprises a reproductive queen and a sterile worker caste. Nurse bees feed all larvae progressively with a caste-specific food jelly until the prepupal stage. Only those larvae that are exclusively fed a large amount of royal jelly (RJ) develop into queens [1]. RJ is a composite secretion of two specialized head glands: the mandibular glands, which produc...

Iron line afterglows: how to produce them

We discuss how a powerful iron line emission can be produced if ∼ 1− 5 iron rich solar masses are concentrated in the close vicinity of the burst. Recombination, thermal and fluorescent reflection are discussed. We find that recombination suffers the high Compton temperature of the plasma while the other two scenarios are not mutually exclusive and could account for the claimed iron line detect...

How to Produce the Pons-Fleischmann Effect

Conditions required for producing excess energy in PdD created in an electrolytic cell are described and reasons for their importance are discussed. This difficult to accept effect can now be produced with a high probability for success using the described procedures.

How mitochondria produce reactive oxygen species

The production of ROS (reactive oxygen species) by mammalian mitochondria is important because it underlies oxidative damage in many pathologies and contributes to retrograde redox signalling from the organelle to the cytosol and nucleus. Superoxide (O2(*-)) is the proximal mitochondrial ROS, and in the present review I outline the principles that govern O2(*-) production within the matrix of m...
